Bio

My experience spans branding, editorial design, and type design, from newspaper layouts to work in advertising agencies and design studios. This range has given me a strong foundation in visual communication, combining expressive design with functional, user-focused thinking.

I’m currently working as a Font Developer at Dalton Maag, contributing to the design and development of custom fonts used in global digital products. My work includes multi-script type design, ensuring that typography performs consistently across different languages, platforms, and contexts. I collaborate closely with designers and engineers to translate typographic systems into real-world interfaces, balancing visual quality with technical constraints.

Through this work, I’ve contributed to projects for international clients such as Netflix, Amazon, and Google, as well as to the development of typefaces within Dalton Maag’s library, including Aktiv Grotesk, Objektiv, and Marble Arch.

Beyond type design, I focus on UI and product design, with an interest in how design decisions shape usability, clarity, and user experience. I approach design as a balance between system thinking and visual expression, aiming to create products that are both functional and distinctive.

Profile

I’m a Product Designer with a background in type design, font development, and front-end, working at the intersection of writing systems, UI, design systems, and engineering. Over the past 9+ years I’ve contributed to projects for both small teams and large international organizations, moving between concept, direction, and delivery.

My experience combines visual craft with technical execution. I’m comfortable across disciplines, collaborating with cross-functional teams where alignment between design, engineering, and business is critical.

At Dalton Maag I work on multi-script type design and font production for global digital products, ensuring consistency and readability across different writing systems, languages, and cultural contexts β€” and collaborating with engineers to improve QA workflows and design system foundations.

I’m particularly interested in accessibility, usability, and how typographic decisions impact user experience at scale. I also enjoy exploring new tools and technologies, especially where they change how we design, build, and communicate.

This site is designed and maintained by Carlos de Toro. It is a static site hosted on GitLab Pages, built with plain HTML, CSS, and a small Python Markdown pipeline for writing.

Typography is set in self-hosted IBM Plex. Posts are written in Markdown, Substack entries are fetched at build time, and the site avoids WordPress or a database by design.
